For the Children
Want to make a six year-old little girl’s YEAR? Grab a few dollars and stop by our house Friday or Saturday between 8:00 and noon (1512 Jennifer Drive in Marlowe Manor). Multi-family garage sale, with all proceeds for the ongoing work in Haiti (via our friends at Antioch Community Church). Hundreds of children’s shoes in all sizes, clothes, toys, baby bedding, double stroller, television, household items and more.
My 5 y.o. just handed her 12 y.o. sister a piece of paper and said, "You pray first." She said, "What?"
Caris said, "You pray first - for the people who don't have homes to sleep in tonight." It was her map of Haiti from FSK - Love that girl!
That was my facebook entry on January 13th, following the devastating earthquake that rocked Haiti. The people there have remained on Caris’ mind and heart ever since. She speaks of and prays for them regularly, and began begging to have a garage sale “to give the money to Haiti” when she first saw yard sale signs this spring.
About a month ago, Caris began writing notes to anyone and everyone she knows – at church, in the neighborhood, at the park – to say “The Donleys are going to have a garage sale soon for Haiti.” You can imagine the puzzled looks we got when we explained it was just something she was hoping to do one day.
Apparently Caris didn’t get it that I like to GO to garage sales, not host them. Well, this very slow and stubborn mom has finally realized that it is MOST important to her little 6 year-old heart, so this weekend it is. We’ve been cleaning out bookshelves and closets to get ready.
Amazingly, God dropped 2 vans FULL of "stuff" in our lap via Cindy Brantley following Duck Duck Goose. I didn't even GO to Duck Duck Goose. . . the stuff came to me. Apparently Caris' heart is really close to God's heart, too!
After the toys, shoes and more arrived on Tuesday, I sent out an SOS to neighbors looking for tables. A few were able to help in that way, but most just wanted to donate more “stuff” for Caris’ sale. It is amazing to see her faith grow, and humbling to me to realize I could have met this heart desire of hers so much sooner had I only really listened and taken note.
God is so patient with me!
